Ex-Canadian National FP9A (#6518) was assigned to VIA Rail by the time this photo was taken at Brockville, Ont. in July 1976. Another FP9A (#6516) waiting just behind has already been repainted in the VIA scheme current at the time. The train originated in Toronto and is about to be split into two, with one section heading for Ottawa and the other continuing on to Montreal.

The track heading off to the far right soon curves back to the left, ducks under the CN main line and heads towards downtown Brockville. The rails are now long gone and most of the right-of-way has become the Brockville Trail recreational path.

Just behind us are the remains of Canada's first railway tunnel, built in 1860 to duck under the city and reach the waterfront docks. The tunnel was shuttered long ago but has more recently been renovated and reopened as a tourist attraction.
